The Absolute Best Food in Charleston

The Absolute Best Food in Charleston

I have a deeply held belief that Charleston restaurants exist to make me question my life choices, and I’m not mad about it. I’ve spent the last few months eating my way through this city, from the magical, impossibly tender grouper at FIG to the dirty-fried-chicken-sandwich glory that is Rudy Royale (someone please check on that brioche crumb salad, it’s a problem).

Sure, my jeans are tighter, but my heart is full. I even waited in line at 4:45 p.

m. for Chubby Fish like an actual fool.

So, here’s the complete, honest rundown. Consider it your new favorite excuse to skip the Shem Creek parking lot.

Highlights
Creative cocktails, gorgeous presentation
Fresh, inventive seafood dishes
Attentive service, dietary savvy
Memorable desserts worth saving room

I walked into Iron Rose expecting a drink, but I left questioning every cocktail I've ever ordered before. The presentation alone is worth the price of admission, but then the seafood showed up and I forgot my own name. Fresh, inventive, and not trying too hard to be clever. Our server somehow knew my dietary restrictions before I did, which is either excellent training or witchcraft. I'm not ruling out either. Save room for dessert, because the ones here are the kind of memory you replay at 2 a.m. I may have groaned out loud. No regrets.

Smoked old fashioned exceptional
Crème brûlée flambéd tableside
Diverse menu, duck confit
Best mocktails around
Staff wonderfully attentive

AZUR is the kind of place where you accidentally make eye contact with the server and suddenly you're best friends. The smoked old fashioned arrived with a theatrical puff of smoke, and I applauded internally. Then the crème brûlée got flambéed right at the table, which felt like a magic show I didn't buy tickets for. The duck confit was rich and tender, but honestly, the mocktails stole the show for me. I don't even drink, and I was jealous of the people who did. But they made me something so good I almost forgot it was virgin. The staff hovered just enough to be attentive without being creepy. I left full, happy, and slightly suspicious of how smooth everything went.

Grouper cooked to perfection
Great bartender and service
Worth booking during SEWE
Fish entrees are standouts
We will definitely return

FIG lives up to the hype, and I hate saying that because I'm a cynic. The grouper was cooked so perfectly I wanted to cry into my plate, but I held it together because the bartender was watching. He mixed a mean drink and somehow remembered my face when I came back for a second round. The service was top-notch, and I noticed everyone around me smiling like they'd just won a prize. If you're in town during SEWE, book a table early because this place fills up faster than a parking spot on King Street. I will definitely return, and I'm not usually a repeat offender. But some things are worth breaking your own rules for.

Classic upscale Southern dining
Impeccable, warm hospitality
Buttery sea bass and wagyu
Fresh, generous seafood tower
Elegant yet welcoming atmosphere

High Cotton feels like you've stepped into a Southern novel, but the kind where everyone is rich and no one dies tragically. The sea bass was so buttery I considered licking the plate, but I have some dignity left. The wagyu melted like it had been waiting its whole life to meet my mouth. We ordered the seafood tower because we're extra, and it arrived looking like a centerpiece at a wedding. The service was warm, impeccable, and never made me feel like I needed to use the right fork. It's elegant without being stuffy, and I left feeling like I'd just been hugged by a very well-dressed grandmother.

Best meal of life
Drinks matched every dish
Worth every penny
A menu meant for sharing

Vern's is the kind of meal that makes you question every life choice that led you to this moment. I'm not being dramatic. Our server anticipated every need before I even knew I had it, like a psychic in an apron. The drinks paired so perfectly with each dish that I started to suspect the kitchen and bar were in cahoots. Everything on the menu is meant for sharing, which is great if you're with someone you like and terrible if you're me and want it all. It's worth every penny, and I mean that while knowing I spent more than I should have. Best meal of my life, and I'm not exaggerating. Okay, maybe a little, but only because I'm still recovering.

Highlights
Killer fried chicken sandwiches
Heavenly brioche crumb salad
Sweet and crispy potatoes
Patient, attentive bar service
Fried pickles with Rudy’s sauce

Rudy Royale is my kind of place because I walked in, ordered a fried chicken sandwich, and left a changed woman. The sandwich was killer, as promised, with the kind of crunch that echoes in your skull. But the real surprise was the brioche crumb salad. I know, salad. But this one had so much buttery crumb action that I forgot I was eating vegetables. The sweet and crispy potatoes were like candy, and I ate them like I was in a competition. The bartender was patient with me while I asked a million questions about the menu. And the fried pickles with Rudy's sauce? I'm still thinking about them. I might need a support group.

Whipped ricotta with honey
Knowledgeable, accommodating service
Vegetarian vegetable wow factor
Silky chocolate mousse surprise
Prime outdoor lunch seating

Slightly North of Broad, or SNOB if you're nasty, is a Charleston classic that somehow doesn't feel tired. The whipped ricotta with honey is the kind of appetizer that makes you wonder why you ever eat anything else. Our server knew the menu inside and out, and she didn't flinch when I asked for a vegetarian version of everything. The vegetable dish she brought out was so good I almost felt guilty eating my own portion. The chocolate mousse for dessert was silky and light, like a cloud with a sugar problem. We sat outside for lunch, which is prime real estate in this town. I'm already planning my next excuse to go back.

Biscuit worth a return trip
Subtle, gourmet burger magic
Celery salad surprised and delighted
Perfectly fun, sophisticated dinner spot
Seasonal menu keeps us hooked

Lowland is the kind of dinner spot that makes you feel like you've found a secret, even though everyone else has found it too. The biscuit stole my heart from the first bite, and I'm not ashamed to admit I considered ordering a second one for the road. The burger might look simple, but it's got this subtle magic that I can't explain. Probably because it's delicious and I ate it too fast. The celery salad surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible. It was fresh, crunchy, and not boring at all. The seasonal menu keeps things interesting, so I keep coming back. It's sophisticated but fun, like wearing a velvet tuxedo to a dive bar. I love it.

Octopus, Polenta, Bolognese worth it
Service that feels effortless
Cozy elegance, pure comfort
Top three in Charleston, easily
Hard to get in, worth it

Sorelle is one of those places that makes you wonder why you ever eat anywhere else. I had the octopus, polenta, and bolognese, and each one was better than the last. The octopus was tender, the polenta was creamy, and the bolognese tasted like it had been simmering for a thousand years. The service felt effortless, like the staff just knew what I needed without me asking. The atmosphere is cozy and elegant, like a fancy blanket made of pasta. It's hard to get a reservation, but trust me, it's worth the fight. Easily top three in Charleston, and maybe the world. I'm not a food critic, but I play one on my couch.

Anything but ordinary indeed
Oysters that change lives
Sit at the bar
Service with genuine warmth
Cocktails worth writing home

The Ordinary is anything but, and I say that with the utmost respect. The oysters here are the kind that change your life, or at least your week. I sat at the bar because someone told me to, and they were right. The bartender was warm, genuine, and poured me a cocktail that I'm still trying to recreate at home. I failed. The service was spot-on, and I never felt rushed, even when I was just staring at the oyster shells like they held the secrets to the universe. The crowd is a mix of locals and tourists, and everyone looks happy. I left thinking about those oysters for days. That's not normal. That's The Ordinary.

Best meal ever had
Curry wreckfish incredibly flavorful
Grilled oysters super unique
Impeccable, attentive service
Worth the early queue

Chubby Fish is worth the early queue, and I'll say that while standing in line at 4:45 p.m. like a fool. The curry wreckfish was so flavorful that I almost cried, and I'm not a cryer. The grilled oysters were unlike anything I've had before, smoky and briny and weirdly perfect. The service was impeccable, the kind that makes you feel like you're the only person in the room. I had the best meal of my life here, and I mean that every time I say it. The restaurant is small and unassuming, but the food is anything but. I waited for probably an hour, and I'd do it again. That's love, or hunger.

Perfect for special occasions
Gnudi and butter unforgettable
Friendly, professional service
Bar seating with great bartenders

The Establishment is where you go when you want to feel fancy without being a jerk about it. The gnudi and butter were unforgettable, like little pillows of joy that disappeared too fast. The service was friendly and professional, and the bartenders at the bar were top-notch. I sat at the bar because the show is better there, and I was right. The cocktails were perfect, and the bartender remembered my order after one round. It's the kind of place for special occasions, but honestly, I'd go on a random Tuesday just because. The atmosphere is elegant but not stuffy, and I left feeling like I'd done something right. I'll be back for the gnudi. And the butter.
